Design begins by deeply studying the culture of the target audience and identifying salient needs, goals, and interests. Once this research is underway, a thorough plan for instruction (if instruction is indeed the best path forward) can be formulated to satisfy learning needs and produce desired outcomes. Critically, this plan should ensure strong alignment between all course components from objectives to assessment.
Instructional Systems Design
"Instructional Systems Design (ISD) is an organized procedure that includes the steps of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating instruction".
—Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 31
The Zoom CORE is a set of best practices for teaching on Zoom, recommended for faculty by the Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies unit at Virginia Tech. The primary deliverable for the project was a live online workshop with a supplemental webpage. The Dick and Carey Model was used as the foundational approach in this 170+ hour project.
Message Design
"The specification and manipulation of media for the purpose of producing learning."
—Larson & Lockee, 2020, p. 402
Instructional Strategies
"Instructional strategies foster student learning including pre-instructional activities, presentation of content, learner participation, assessment and follow-through activities."
—Dick, Carey, & Carey, 2005, p.7
The Need: The target audience is adult learners looking to monitor the health of a loved one.
The Approach: The Dick and Carey model was followed throughout this project. The chosen format was online asynchronous delivery.
Challenges: Since gauging blood pressure is a complex skill requiring dexterity as well as auditory and visual recognition, the challenge was thoroughly capturing all subordinate skills and goals in the instructional analysis. Once captured, a subset of the skills were selected to serve as the cornerstone for the instruction. From there, the objectives, assessment items, and instructional strategy steadily clicked into place.
The Results: The instructional strategy for this project was crafted to be particularly robust. Because of the onset of the pandemic, many development tools housed in computer labs were no longer accessible, so the final deliverable options for the course were amended accordingly. The instructional strategy demonstrates strong alignment, comprehensive information presented in an immersive way, and opportunities for practice and self-assessment.
Learner Characteristics
"Learner characteristics are those facets of the learner's experiential background that impact the effectiveness of a learning process".
—Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 32
VT TLOS / EDIT 5904 Project & Report - Spring 2021
Here is the Qualtrics report of the Zoom CORE Learner Analysis Survey. This provided some valuable insights into VT instructors' experience , skills, goals and interests, as discussed in the Needs Assessment (below, right). While 132 responses were collected in total, I had received 123 responses during the analysis timeframe, so my analysis is based on that data. (The additional responses did not significantly alter the results.)
EDIT 5614 Digitally Mediated Learning - Spring 2020
Here is a Qualtrics report of the Learner Analysis Survey conducted with teachers at the A. Linwood Holton Governor's School. This gave us an understanding of the target learners' experience and interest in specific software for creating multimedia learning objects.
